K had to go out for a little bit this morning to do some interviews for a paper he's working on now, so the kids and I took advantage of that short window of time to bake a cake. Yup, the kids did the work! They took turns stirring. It was a little stressful with E not wanting to listen to instructions. She watched me crack an egg, and promptly decided that she could do the same with the other egg. It took some quick reflexes for me to catch it so that the whole egg, shell and all, wouldn't drop into the mixing bowl. Meanwhile, J is yelling, "no, no, mei-mei" to try to get her to stop. Stressful, but hilarious too.
After the cake baked, it was time to decorate! To avoid a colossal mess, I did the frosting. Then the kids put on the sugar decorations by themselves. It took J a couple of minutes to figure out that the frosting was sweet and yummy. But once he did, he was busy licking his fingers.
So ta-dah! The final product.
J was so cute. As we're mixing the cake, it suddenly occurs to him, so he quickly asks me, "What toy do we give to Daddy?". He was quite worried that K wouldn't have a birthday present toy. But then he figured never mind, we have cake.
When K came back, J ran to the door to wait for him and the moment the door opened, J yelled "SURPRISE!!". And "Happy Birthday, Daddy" too. So cute. It is moments like these that light up our hearts.
